Leg & Foot Swelling Basics
Swelling in the feet, ankles and legs is often called peripheral edema. It can be mild and temporary, but it can also signal a medical condition.
Possible Causes
| Category | Examples |
|---|---|
| Everyday / Temporary | Long periods of standing or sitting, travel, warm weather and high salt intake. |
| Vein / Circulation | Venous insufficiency, varicose veins or a blood clot. |
| Injury / Infection | Sprain, surgery, cellulitis or another local problem. |
| Medical Conditions | Heart failure, kidney disease, liver disease and lymphatic problems. |
| Medicines / Hormones | Some blood-pressure medicines, hormones, NSAIDs and steroids. |
Seek Urgent Care
- Shortness of breath or chest pain.
- Coughing blood, fainting or severe lightheadedness.
- New swelling, pain, warmth or redness in one leg.
- Fever with a red or warm swollen leg.
- Rapidly worsening swelling or sudden symptoms.
Why a Supplement Is Not a Diagnosis
Edema treatment depends on the cause. A supplement cannot determine whether swelling is due to prolonged standing, a medicine, venous disease, a blood clot, infection, or heart, kidney or liver disease.
